Aromatherapy is a therapy that is gaining credibility as a legitimate way to treat certain ailments and there are people who are actually trained in this art. It is thought to go beyond treating the physical body and can actually have psychological effects on the self. There are two main types of aromatherapy that are commonly used to treat everyday illnesses and ailments. These types of aromatherapy work on two levels, physical and psychological.

You may have read about or heard that essential oils have many benefits and that massaging yourself or a loved one with essential oils is a pleasurable activity. (...)

You may have read about or heard that essential oils have many benefits and that massaging yourself or a loved one with essential oils is a pleasurable activity. If you would like to combine aromatherapy and massage there are a few things you need to know about mixing your own aromatherapy oils.

The first thing you need to know about mixing your own aromatherapy oils is that you cannot put oils directly onto the skin. You will need to mix essential oils with base oils when massaging. Not all essential oils are good when mixed together.

Massage Oils

When you want to start mixing your own aromatherapy oils for massage you should first select a base oil. This should be a natural oil like almond oil, sunflower, grapeseed, avocado, or even olive oil. Mix small amounts of the oil, just enough for each massage session.

Remember that when you are mixing your own aromatherapy oils you need very little essential oils. For 25 ml of oil you only need 7 drops of essential oil, at most 25. Less is more when you are mixing your own aromatherapy oils.

Combinations

While some people see essential oils as harmless it is important to remember that like any therapy there are certain things you should not do. For example there are some essential oils that should not be used in pregnancy and some essential oils should not be used at certain times.

It's best to start with recipes before you start mixing your own aromatherapy oils. This is because you might inadvertently mix something that is dangerous or has a contradictory effect than what you had hoped for.

Look for recipes or specific conditions or illnesses, for example arthritic joint pain can be helped with two ounces of base oil with 20 drops of chamomile and 5 drops of black pepper. Massage this oil into the joints that are giving you problems very gently.

For acne you can mix an ounce of carrier oil, apricot kernel oil is recommended, with 12 drops of lavender, 7 drops of tea tree oil, and one drop of geranium oil. Mix the ingredients into an amber bottle and roll between the palms.

Apply to the face, avoid the area around the eyes, nostrils, and lips. These are just a starting point for you to start mixing your own aromatherapy oils. Once you have read more about essential oils and their properties you can start creating your own recipes

It might sound too good to be true to be able to inhale smells of natural plant extracts to alleviate stress, depression, symptoms of the common cold, and other common ailments. (...)

It might sound too good to be true to be able to inhale smells of natural plant extracts to alleviate stress, depression, symptoms of the common cold, and other common ailments. The fact is that it is actually possible through aromatherapy. Many people mistakenly believe that aromatherapy is just another alternative treatment popularized by quacks but what they don't realize is that there is actually a scientific explanation as to why aromatherapy is effective. So how does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy And Your Sense Of Smell

How does aromatherapy work when you inhale the essential oils? About 15 percent of the air you breathe goes to the roof of the nose, where olfactory receptors receive it and send messages to the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system is connected with mood, instinct, and emotion. It's thought that the natural phytochemicals in aromatherapy oils are capable of unlocking emotions. For example, you have probably had an experience where you smelled something such as an apple pie baking and it brought you back to childhood when your grandma baked pies during Thanksgiving. The limbic system of the brain is also connected with heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress level, and hormone imbalance.

Aromatherapy's Effects From Skin Absorption

How does aromatherapy work when you apply essential oils to your skin? Because essential oils are so concentrated, they have the ability to deeply penetrate the skin and then enter the bloodstream. When absorbed into body fluids, essential oils can help kill bacteria and viruses as well as stimulate the body's immune system. Some essential oils improve blood circulation and help your body eliminate toxins effectively. Others help to rejuvenate cells and fight off disease by boosting your body's natural healing system.

Essential oils are very concentrated so you have to make sure to use them on your skin only after diluting them. It always best to take precautions and do a patch test for any essential oil before using it. In order to do a patch test, put a drop of essential oil on the inside of your elbow and cover it with a bandage. If there is irritation after 24 hours, you should avoid using that particular oil. There's no way to really know if which oil will give you allergies unless you try each and every one.

In conclusion, how does aromatherapy work? It's clear that there is a scientific explanation for why aromatherapy works and it provides clear evidence as to why aromatherapy is beneficial. Try aromatherapy for yourself to experience its long list of benefits. If you encounter any naysayers, you will be prepared to explain why and how aromatherapy works.

Aromatherapy is an age old concept that uses the essences of herbs and botanicals to bring about the well being of an individual. (...)

Aromatherapy is an age old concept that uses the essences of herbs and botanicals to bring about the well being of an individual. The scents of the herbs, spices and other botanicals are often infused into forms which carry them until they are exposed to heat or air which helps to break down the oils and extracts for better dispersal of the scent and elements.

The Organic Concept Of Aromatherapy Soy Candles

Aromatherapy soy candles are growing more popular these days due mainly to the organic concept behind them. Aromatherapy soy candles are supposed to be made from soy wax. The source of the soy wax is the hydrogenated soybean oil. Although, soy candles were initially made without the integration of scent and aromas, aromatherapy soy candles are widely used.

Benefits

Aromatherapy soy candles are basically cheaper than aromatherapy candles made from beeswax. Not only is soy wax a renewable resource but it is also a resource which we have basic control of since we get it from plants which we can grow compared to beeswax which we get from bees. Aromatherapy soy candles are natural and they do not emit dangerous substances when they are lit. Compared to paraffin based candles, aromatherapy soy candles are as safe as those made from beeswax because the soot they produce is minimal.

Aromatherapy soy candles and other candles made from soot are also worthy of buying and use because they last at last twice as much as candles made from paraffin. This makes them more inexpensive than paraffin wax based candles when you come to think of it. You save not only your health but also your money is intact.

Aromatherapy soy candles also dispense more scent into the air compared to any other candles. The reason behind this is the markedly lower melting point of the soybean oil which is integrated into the candle. This makes the candle a lot less hotter than others and makes it disperse the scent faster by not burning the scent altogether. The lower melting point makes the wax pool around the flame bigger which then makes for a larger area where the aromatherapy oils are burned.

Aromatherapy soy candles can be made at home for your own use. Making them assures you of the organic nature of the candles as well as the quality of work that goes into them. Many producers sell their handiwork to offset some of the costs of making the aromatherapy soy candles.

Stress will inevitably affect you at one point or another in your life. It is hard to stay completely stress-free but the way you manage your stress will make a big difference. (...)

Stress will inevitably affect you at one point or another in your life. It is hard to stay completely stress-free but the way you manage your stress will make a big difference. Some people turn to food, smoking, or drinking to alleviate their stress but that will only make matters worse. Aromatherapy is a healthy and effective way to alleviate stress. So how does aromatherapy relieve stress?

Why Aromatherapy Works

Aromatherapy is a scientifically proven way to alleviate stress and a variety of other physical and mental health issues. Best of all, anyone can do aromatherapy in the comfort of their own home. Aromatherapy works because the concentrated plan extracts, or essential oils, are absorbed by the skin and inhaled. The oils then enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body. The olfactory receptor cells are stimulated when you inhale essential oils and the impulse is transmitted to the limbic system, which is the emotional center of the brain.

The limbic system is connected to areas of the brain linked to memory, breathing, blood circulation, and the endocrine glands. The properties of the oil and its fragrance will determine what effects each oil has on your body and mind. How does aromatherapy relieve stress in particular? Certain chemicals in some essential oils are believed to have therapeutic effects beneficial in relieving stress. These chemicals relieve tension in the central nervous system, anxiety, headaches, muscle tension, and nervous tension. How does aromatherapy relieve stress most effectively? Your best bet is to mix different anti-stress aromatherapy oils so that they can work in synergy together.

Aromatherapy Oils and Blends for Stress

There are numerous aromatherapy oils that are effective in relieving stress. The most popular and inexpensive anti-stress oils are rose geranium, bergamot, lemongrass, and patchouli. Rose geranium is a good nervous system tonic that balances emotions and has a pleasant rose fragrance. Bergamot has a citrus scent that is energizing and stress-relieving. Lemongrass is a good oil for people who are under constant stress and it goes well with patchouli, a calming oil that balances the emotions.

Make no mistake about it. Aromatherapy is hands down the best way to relieve stress easily and effectively in the comfort of your own home. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out how to make effective aromatherapy oil blends and treatments. Aromatherapy's calming effects are highly beneficial for people who have stressful lives. So now that you know the answer to the question, "How does aromatherapy relieve stress?" get out there and start incorporating aromatherapy into your daily routine so you can live a less stressful, more pleasant life!

Aromatherapy is the practice of diffusing scents into the air to improve the mood or the state of a person. Aromatherapy is a great way to help unwind and ease the stress of daily life. (...)

Aromatherapy is the practice of diffusing scents into the air to improve the mood or the state of a person. Aromatherapy is a great way to help unwind and ease the stress of daily life. Many people are exposed to the aspect of aromatherapy without even knowing that they are. This is evident in toiletries that are infused with the extract and the scent of certain botanicals and herbs.

Candles And Candle Burners

Aromatherapy diffusers are often used to do the job while others often integrate scents or herbal extracts into candles and then light these up to achieve the goal of aromatherapy. Candles may be considered as aromatherapy diffusers since they do diffuse the scent that is integrated into them. Candle burners may also be considered as aromatherapy diffusers since the heat up the oils on the small shallow basin when the candle below it is lit up. Many people like candle burners not only for the scent that they bring but also for aesthetic reasons. Many of these types of aromatherapy diffusers come in beautiful yet functional shapes and forms. These aromatherapy diffusers also have designs on the sides which allow the light of the candle to come out and form silhouettes on the walls.

Reed Diffusers

These kinds of aromatherapy diffusers utilize the absorbency of reeds and other natural sticks that are highly absorbent. The idea is to place the fragrance in a bottle with a preferably narrow neck (about and inch or two diameter) and then place a reed or several reeds into the bottle. The reed absorbs the fragrance from the bottom and then as the fragrance works its way up, releases it into the air. These types of aromatherapy diffusers are among the longer lasting ones as they can last several months or years depending on the size of the bottle and the quantity of fragrance placed in it.

Lamp Rings And Nebulizers

Lamp rings are effective aromatherapy diffusers. These rings are usually made of terracotta on which aromatherapy oils are applied to by droppers. The rings are then placed on the bulb of the lamp. The heat emanating from the lamp helps to releases the scent of the rings into the air. Nebulizers are aromatherapy diffusers that work to expose aromatherapy oils to air which break them down into vapor, making them easier to dispense.

These different types of aromatherapy diffusers all function well to help the individual achieve the goal of having a better ambience or state of health and mind.

Aromatherapy is the practice of infusing a distinct smell or scent to achieve a state of mind or an ambience. (...)

Aromatherapy is the practice of infusing a distinct smell or scent to achieve a state of mind or an ambience. The many different scents which are usually derived from herbs and other botanicals come in many forms and their applications are also in different ways. The history of aromatherapy brings to light the many ways that aromatherapy was used.

Early History Of Aromatherapy

The history of aromatherapy dates back to as far as 3,500 B.C. in Egypt. The history of aromatherapy may have begun when early Egyptians burned wood, herbs and spices as part of their offerings to the gods. They believed that the smoke brought their prayers to the heavens. It was after this practice that the solid history of aromatherapy was developed. Egyptian doctors made concoctions from herbs and spices which had scents and aromas that can uplift the afflictions that the people may be feeling.

The Egyptians may also have started the trend of using perfume. In the history of aromatherapy, it has stated that early Egyptian women wore wax cones on their heads which were mixed with scents from herbs and spices. These waxy cones would melt in the heat and diffuse the aroma as the women went along their daily lives. Both men and women would also use oils and herbal extracts to protect their bodies from the sun and at the same time smell good. The Egyptians honed and improved their art of aromatics and the other neighboring countries borrowed from their knowledge on this.

The use of herbs and other botanicals as medicine became more and more scientific as the years went by. Instead of being based solely on how good the medication or herbs smelled, it is the overall effect that it has on the body which is now the focus. The history of aromatherapy may have separated from modern medicine at this point.

Studies and research have proven what is in the history of aromatherapy, scents and smells can have an effect on the human body but modern medicine may have the key to immediate and total cures. Aromatherapy is now relegated as one of the many forms of alternative medicine which is used to primarily alleviate the mood and then treat maladies that may have stricken people.

The history of aromatherapy is far more interesting that its use now. It may have been the foundation on which modern medicine is based on or a branch from which modern medicine deviated from.

Aromatherapy is a very old practice that utilizes scents and aromas of mostly herbs and other botanicals to achieve well being in a person. Aromatherapy candles are among the more popular forms of aromatherapy diffusers there are. The concept behind aromatherapy candles is to let the flame and the heat from the wick break down the integrated oils or extracts in the candle and disperse them into the air.

Advantages Of Aromatherapy Candles

Aromatherapy candles have the distinct advantage of having a very natural flame to light up the room or area. Many people find the light or flame from a candle very romantic or comforting. The lit candles, whether they are aromatherapy candles or not, do add to the ambience of an area or room. In many cases, candles are lit in groups or three or more to create a mood in the room.

Another advantage of aromatherapy candles is that they are basically cheaper than other aromatherapy diffusers and also serve to light up a dark room as well as diffuse scent. Blackouts or power outages are one of the times when aromatherapy candles or candles of any kind, come in handy. They not only lend light to a dark room but they also help to calm a person down in spite of the dark and the panic that may ensue during a power outage.

Disadvantages Of Aromatherapy Candles

The use of candles and aromatherapy also has some disadvantages which we need to be aware of to be able to rectify these. One disadvantage does not actually encompass all aromatherapy candles is the disadvantage of using shoddily produced candles. Not all types of extracts and oils which bring scent are good for us. There are some synthetic scents which do not bring about the desired results since they do not actually contain the elements that are supposed to make us feel better.

It is not only synthetic scents which we need to look out for in aromatherapy candles, the wax and the wick used in the candle should also pass muster as safe for us. Paraffin candles emit substances that can coat our lungs and bring about conditions and diseases which we may not have bargained for when using candles. Natural beeswax is the better alternative to the deadlier paraffin wax use din some candles. The wick in the aromatherapy candles should also be free from lead to be able to bring about better health for the person using the candles with aromatherapy oils.

Aromatherapy is more than just about good scents causing good moods. There have been a lot of scientific studies done to learn about the effects of aromatherapy on moods, mind, and body. You can enjoy the effects of aromatherapy by applying the diluted oils to your skin or inhaling them by putting them in a burner, candle, inhaler, or bath. When you apply diluted oils to your skin, they are absorbed and eventually enter you bloodstream and travel through your body. When you inhale aromatherapy oils, the olfactory receptors send messages to your brain.

Aromatherapy is a very easy and effective way to treat mood disorders like depression, anxiety, and stress. If you have time to take a therapeutic aromatherapy bath everyday that is great but if not, you can add a few drops of aromatherapy oils on a handkerchief and inhale it on the go. You can also give yourself a neck or hand massage to experience the effects of aromatherapy.

Why Aromatherapy Works

The French word "sentir" means to smell and to feel. To put is simply, good smells can make us feel good while bad smells can make us feel bad or agitate us. The human brain processes smells in the limbic region, which is primarily responsible for our emotions. Essential oils contain natural phytochemicals that affect the limbic system so when you inhale the scent of an essential oil, the brain releases neurochemicals that create physiological changes and this explains the powerful effects of aromatherapy on mood.

Lavender, bergamot, and patchouli are commonly used as mood enhancers in aromatherapy. Lavender causes serotonin to be released so you feel relaxed. Patchouli is an earthy oil that also has a calming effect. Bergamot has a citrus smell that is uplifting and energizing.

When it comes to effects on the mind, aromatherapy is effective in giving you a mental boost when you are feeling tired or lethargic. The effects of aromatherapy on the mind include improved memory, alertness, and mental clarity. Certain essential oils can be beneficial to use while you work and study, not just while you relax. So there you have it. If you want to balance your emotions, relieve stress, and improve your overall state of mind, try using aromatherapy. The effects of aromatherapy on your mood and mind are far-reaching and highly beneficial. So why not give it a shot? Give yourself the mental boost or mood enhancement you need with aromatherapy.
